    Research Summary

My research interests deal primarily with improving the properties of siRNA and miRNA delivery to cells using nanoparticle carriers.  siRNA and miRNA are short RNA strands that function to knockdown gene expression in cells through the endogenous RNAi pathway.  Current delivery methods for these effector molecules are limited to a few classes of vectors (polymeric, lipid, and viral).  Little work has been performed with nanoparticle carriers for these molecules.

Nanoparticles, such as semiconductor quantum dots, offer advantages through cell-specific targeting and imaging modalities to improve the efficacy of delivery of siRNA.  Through tunable polymeric coatings of these nanoparticles, our group is working to improve siRNA protection, release characteristics, and cellular delivery for siRNA and miRNA molecules for treatment of disease.
