My thesis project focuses on designing of multifunctional nanoparticles for drug delivery with surface enhanced raman scattering (SERS) application. The main goal of the project is to engineer self-assembled, biocompatible polymer-gold conjugate that will specifically carry anticancer agent to tumor cells with minimal harm to healthy cells. The long-term goal is to create a biocompatible drug carrier that will enhance the efficacy (i.e. solubility and specificity) of a drug and reduce cytotoxicity for successful chemotherapy. In addition, polymer-gold conjugate will be loaded with raman tag molecules to induce SERS. SERS active nanoparticles will not only allow us to detect and identify cancer cells but also allow us to verify drug release to cancer cells. Application of SERS will help us to monitor intracellular distribution of drugs in real-time scale. |

2008-2009 CD4-GAANN Fellowship Kate Lee recently awarded 2008 GAANN Fellowship The Georgia Institute of Technology's Center for Drug Design, Development and Delivery (CD4) recently awarded Kate Lee with a 2008 GAANN Fellowship. In addition to research, the center focuses on educational programs designed to help students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels understand the needs of the pharmaceutical industry. Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Department of Education's Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program. 2005-2009 President's Fellowship, Georgia Institute of Technology |
